Get ready for an open water adventure
Participating in the Best Fest requires adequate preparation to fully enjoy this unique open water experience. We at Hotel Colonial, tell you the best way to prepare for this sports event.
Recommended training depending on distance
Preparation for Best Fest varies depending on your chosen distance. For events up to 5km, a 12-week training plan is ideal. A comprehensive, well-structured programme allows you to gradually increase volume and intensity while preventing injuries and burnout.
The weeks of highest load can reach up to 21 km for long distances, while for shorter events it is recommended to reach about 19 km per week with a slower progression. In addition to swimming, it is essential to include:
- Full-body strength training
- Open water-specific sessions
- Technique excercise in the pool
In the last 7-10 days before the event, gradually reduce the volume of training, but maintain some moderate intensity sessions so that you don't lose the enthusiasm.
Essential equipment for Best Fest
To enjoy Best Fest safely you will need specific equipment. Essential items include:
- Visibility and security: A tow float is a must, especially for events where swimmers share the water with boats. A brightly coloured swim cap is also recommended.
- Thermal protection: While the Mediterranean is warmer than many seas, a wetsuit offers extra buoyancy and comfort. Neoprene socks and gloves can also help.
- Hydration and comfort: Some tow floats have compartments for belongings and even hydration systems – perfect for long sessions.
Acclimatisation to Mediterranean waters
We recommend a few open water sessions before the event to get used to swimming without references such as the pool's bottom lines. The Best Centre offers technical sessions in its 50m Olympic size pool, as well as masterclasses in the crystal clear waters of the local beaches.
You can also practice bilateral breathing and ‘sighting’ (raising your head to get oriented). The waters between Colonia Sant Jordi and the Cabrera archipelago are the first marine conservation area in Spain, with ideal conditions for open water swimming.
The competitions of the Best Fest Mallorca
The Best Fest Mallorca programme includes a range of aquatic challenges for every swimmer. Across seven days, from 24 to 30 May 2025, you’ll be able to take part in up to seven spectacular events – each with its own charm and level of difficulty.
