Ses Salines, a stroll through the town

Ses Salines is a municipality of Majorca which is lucky enough to be home to some of the most beautiful beaches not just in Majorca, but in the whole of the Balearic Islands. Real paradises like Es Carbó, Es Caragol, Cala Marmols or Es Dolç can all be found in Ses Salines.

But Ses Salines is also the name of the municipality’s capital, a small town which is typical of rural Majorca, very close to our hotel, where you will be amazed by the charming range of bars, restaurants and little shops.

Things to see in Ses Salines, Majorca

If you are lucky enough to be on holiday near Colonia de Sant Jordi – an área which also belongs to this municipality – and you take a drive through the town of Ses Salines, you will no doubt feel tempted to stop and try some of the food and drink on offer at its beautiful terraces.

The main street in Ses Salines is not only a beautiful example of traditional Majorcan architecture, with exquisite sandstone façades, but it is also dotted with charming little terraces with a very welcoming atmosphere, especially when the sun is shining.

As well as the terraces, bars and restaurants, you will also find little local businesses in Ses Salines, which are worth a visit just for their decoration alone. For example, at the Pastelería Xesquet bakery, you will find bread made from sourdough and ancient varieties of Majorcan wheat, Xeixa. You can also try their traditional Majorcan pastries: Empanadas, Robiol pasties, Coca de trampo flatbreads, and much more.

Cassai Home & Fashion is another establishment that is worth stopping off at. A visit to the Cassai shop, where you will find homeware, fashion and other decorative trinkets, is sure to awaken your Mediterranean senses.

On the main Street of Ses Salines, you will also find the Town Hall, the Plaza Mayor (Main Square) and the Church of Sant Bartolomé. As well as these buildings, history lovers will be able to discover places of archaeological interest in the town centre of Ses Salines by following the self-guided tour – with QR codes – that takes you through the streets behind the main square.

Other point of interest in Ses Salines can be found on the outskirts: The ancient Talayotic settlement of “Els Antigors”, located just 200m from the Ses Salines cemetery, and the Cas Perets area, a network of pathways that allow you to explore the town’s surroundings on foot or by bicycle.

Oh, and if you visit the town on a Thursday, don’t miss the Ses Salines weekly market, which takes place every Thursday from 7:00am to 1:00pm in the Main Square, where you will find a huge selection of traditional Majorcan products.

Restaurants in Ses Salines

Out of all the restaurants you can find in Ses Salines, here are the two most popular ones: Cassai Grand Café & Restaurant and Casa Manolo.

The Cassai Restaurant – the owners of which have also opened in another location in Colonia de Sant Jordi – will leave your jaw on the floor with its incredible indoor terrace: A hundred-year-old courtyard decorated with ivy, shabby chic furniture and an impressive vintage décor. The food on offer here is completely in keeping with the décor: Traditional Mediterranean food, in fusion with avant-garde cuisine.

Casa Manolo, on the other hand, stands out due to its authenticity and the quality of its main ingredient: Fresh fish from the Majorcan coast. Its specialities include local squid dish Calamar de Potera, lobster stew and fish baked in sea salt.

Salt in Ses Salines

Ses Salines gets its name from the large number of salt flats – areas where salt has come in from the sea and dried out – surrounding the municipality. Although there are no actual salt flats in the town of Ses Salines itself, you can visit shops which specialise in tasting and selling salt from the area – undoubtedly one of the best souvenirs you can take home from your trip here.

One of these shops is Bodega Llum de Sal, where you will find a fusion of salt, Majorcan wine and other delicatessen products such as different types of oil, jam, Majorcan almonds, spices and pâtés.

The famous Flor de Sal salt flakes can also be found in Ses Salines, at a shop where you can buy all kinds of products relating to salt, including limited editions and variants as unique as beetroot, lemon and lavender, or orange & chilli.

Beaches in Ses Salines

Although it is very close to the sea, the town of Ses Salines does not have direct access to the beach. However, just a few minutes from Ses Salines, you will find some truly idyllic beaches. Colonia de Sant Jordi, the main tourist centre of this municipality, is just a 7-minute drive away from Ses Salines, and from here you can access beaches such as Es Dolç, Es Carbó, Es Trenc or Playa del Marqúes.

Walks to the beaches of Es Caragol and Cala Marmols – the starting point for which is the Ses Salines lighthouse, a magical place that’s also worth a visit – are just a 10-minute drive away from Ses Salines.

If you would prefer to visit the beaches in the neighbouring region of Santanyí, you can also do this from Ses Salines, as the beaches of Cala Llombards, Cala S’Almunia or Es Caló des Moro, are all within easy reach from here.

Weather in Ses Salines

Any time of year is a good time to visit Ses Salines, as it has the benefit of the Mediterranean climate that characterises the whole island of Majorca.

In the summer, temperatures can exceed 30ºC, whereas in winter, the average temperature is usually around 15ºC, meaning you can enjoy a mild, spring-like feel during the coldest months of the year.

If you want the luxury of having the beaches almost completely to yourself, then we recommend visiting Ses Salines outside of the high season. However, it is possible that some shops and other businesses may be closed, meaning the town will be quieter than usual.
