Playa es Dolç, a beach located in Colonia de Sant Jordi, in the municipality of Ses Salines, is one of the most visited beaches in the area due to its beauty, natural surroundings and accessibility. It is a sandy beach, over 700 metres long, where you can enjoy a beautiful, unspoilt setting without giving up all the comforts of a Blue Flag beach, including a beach bar.
But Playa del Dolç is more than just a beach. It’s the gateway to a trail that will lead you to even more of the spectacular beaches that the island of Majorca has to offer, such as Playa des Carbó.
Es Dolç, Colonia de San Jordi
It’s a nice easy walk from our hotel to Es Dolç beach. Simply head to the Port of Colonia de Sant Jordi, one of the most beautiful in Majorca. Once you’ve made it there, you will find a little beach which the locals call Playa des Port; from here, you will see the start of a paved path that will take you to Es Dolç in less than 20 minutes.
If you don’t feel like walking and would rather turn your visit to Playa del Dolç into a real adventure, you will find various hire companies at Playa des Port: motor boats, pedalos (including some with water slides), or even kayaks. A trip out on one of these will allow you to enjoy the stunning views of Majorca from the sea.
Services at the beach
Es Dolç is a sandy beach located just a few metres from the town of Colonia de Sant Jordi, meaning that as well as finding a perfectly unspoilt beach, you will also have easy access to all the services and amenities you need.
The beach also has all the distinctive features of a Blue Flag beach: lifeguards, sunshades, sunbeds, a bar… and everything you need to have a great day at the beach.
Es Dolç Beach Bar
Right at the entrance to the beach you will find the Playa des Dolç beach bar. This bar is right on the beach, at the foot of the sand dunes with views out across the sea and palm parasols that give it that inimitable Mediterranean style. Have a drink in the shade, an aperitif with friends, or even sit down to eat… Choose whatever you feel like to add the finishing touch to your day at the beach!
Where to go diving at Es Dolç beach
Es Dolç is the perfect beach to enjoy with the family due to its accessibility and amenities, but it also offers plenty of options for diving enthusiasts. From the beach you will see lots of little islets – the perfect place to go diving in Majorca.
By the biggest island, called Na Guardia as it looks like a guardian watching over the port of Colonia de Sant Jordi, you will be treated to a wonderful surprise. In the olden days, there used to be a market on this little island, where boats would stop off, unload and sell their goods. As a memory harking back to this time, there is now the shipwreck of a Punic merchants’ boat and a Roman galley ship on the sea bed.
At the end of Playa des Dolç beach, there is a tiny islet that many people call Es Granot (The Toad), as its shape is reminiscent of this curious animal. This is another beautiful area for diving as there is a high concentration of marine life, as well as little pieces of Roman pottery.
Fishermen’s cottages (and an idyllic beach)
If you like to relax in a quiet spot on your trips to the beach, you’ll be pleased to hear that when leaving Playa des Dolç, just a few metres away, you will find a beautiful little seawater lagoon with some charming fishermen’s cottages.
This is a magical spot where local fishermen from Ses Salines used to work and live off the sea. You can see their little cottages with wooden porches and places to store llauts, the island’s traditional boats. Watching a sunset from this special place makes it well worth a visit.
If you walk along past the fishermen’s cottages, you’ll come to the hidden gem we mentioned at the start of this post, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island: Es Carbó. You can reach it by walking for about 20 minutes along the coastline. The large islet that you will see just in front of El Carbó beach is called Na Moltona, and if you swim out to it, you’ll meet its super speedy, intrepid inhabitants: the typical Majorcan lizards known as “sargantanas”.
Do you need any other reason to visit this fantastic beach in the south of Majorca, located in Ses Salines, right in the heart of its main fishing village, Colonia de Sant Jordi?
